Purple Martins need the right size for good breeding potential. Each room should be 6 x 11 or 6 X 12 at a minimum. This allows them to be safer from predators and the elements also to fledge more babies. It actually hurts the survivability of the species by having them nest in such a small compromised space. They will go into a smaller apartment like these, but the fledge rate is almost completely compromised in that small of a space. Adult martins are 7.5” long, so compartments must be large enough to accommodate 4-6 nearly-grown nestlings and both parents. Please think of the birds themselves, rather than the artistic, or inexpensive appeal. Apartments need to be 6 x 11 or 6 X 12 at a minimum. Serious Purple Martin landlords will not consider an apartment this small since it is detrimental to the birds themselves, and their survivability as a species. Their numbers are already diminishing from pesticides and mercury levels where they winter in the Amazon basin. Providing the right size housing for them is the least we can do to keep them healthy, less prone to predators, and breeding properly.

Where do you get those little plug-ins with the hose and what’s on the end? What stops it from draining out or does it come up enough for gravity?

You have to have a rain gutter over the top or it will fill with water.

Those plunge cuts are extremely dangerous for anyone unfamiliar with using a chainsaw

I wonder how many birds actually used the pvc house. Would be interested to know. The houses I make I temporarily hang them to make sure birds will use them.

Unfortunately, another beautiful bird house that is not a good plan for eggs or chicks. The hole is too big for small birds (1 1/2"-1 5/8'), there is inadequate ventilation which means eggs and chicks can over heat, there is no floor drainage, no access door for cleaning, never use perches, bird boxes should be tall so predators can't reach in, all bird boxes should have predator blocks. A beautiful project, but just not good for eggs or chicks.

Please leave out the "resting pin" below the hole. The predators using the pin for better access to chickens.

I make and sell birdhouses and just use a front opening "door" that pivots up.

Most people don't own a band saw and probably would not buy one just to make a log birdhouse, so this is impractical. However, one can often find pine logs already hollowed out by ants.

Great designs, simple and neat. Just pointing out - some acrylic paints may contain toxic elements that could be harmful for birds. Better left unpainted.

What I like most about this design is that it is an ideal use of scrap pinewood. All the “logs” are made from small pieces of wood left over from making use of larger projects. I’ve made 5 of these birdhouses and the people receiving them are delighted. The birds love the chimney too. The male birds like to perch on it while they sing their little hearts out, trying to attract a mate.

I can’t find the terrific detailed plans with measurements. The printed copy I have got some water damage. I’d like to print a clean copy. Can you give me a link?
